Ramaphosa to officiate Armed Forces Day in KZN
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
President Cyril Ramaphosa will be in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday to officiate the SANDF's Armed Forces Day commemoration.
The event is held annually to remember 616 Black South African soldiers that died when a steamship sank on its way to France during World War I.
Ramaphosa, who is the commander-in-chief of the SANDF, will kick off the day with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Empangeni World War II Monument.
A military parade will then follow, where Ramaphosa will be saluted by the troops and deliver an address.
The chief of the SANDF, General Rudzani Maphanywa, says they chose to hold the event in Richards Bay for a reason.
"We have been hosting the Armed Forces Day in more affluent urban areas and we said the people of South Africa that cannot afford to go this these affluent urban areas must also have an opportunity to interact and be with their Armed Forces and we decried to choose Richards Bay as the host city."
