The high tides and rough sea conditions caused by a storm surge caused devastation in some coastal towns over the weekend.

In the Garden Route, an elderly woman was killed after she was swept off her feet.

George Municipality's Gerhard Otto says they've closed several beaches in the town.

"Unfortunately, an elderly lady did get washed off the rocks, and she lost her life. With the lady, there were two other people; they got injured, but they are being treated."

Meanwhile, Cape Town officials say a number of cars and properties were damaged after reports of rough seas in the Gordon's Bay and Kalk Bay areas.

"Initial assessments indicated damage to garage doors of eight properties in the Bikini Beach area of Gordon’s Bay, as well as sand and debris across the affected areas," says Disaster Risk Management's Sonica Lategan.

"The City’s Solid Waste Department started with clean-up operations in Bikini Beach, while traffic services and law enforcement assisted with road closures. Reports of damages to the St. James tidal pool have been received with excessive sand and rocks being deposited in the passenger tunnels."
