Durban family sues doctors for alleged medical negligence

A Durban family is suing two local doctors for R5-million for alleged medical negligence they claim led to the death of their 27-year old daughter.

Uneshree Moodley was admitted to a Durban hospital in July 2014 after being diagnosed with an over active thyroid and a nodule on her right thyroid.

The family alleges that the first physician advised that Uneshree's entire thyroid be removed.

The operation was performed and she was discharged two days later.

She is said to have started experiencing discomfort and other symptoms - including slurred speech, low calcium levels, immense fatigue and discomfort.

She died on August 29. Her father Sagren Moodley says they're struggling to cope with their daughter's death.

"We are going through trauma counselling. The post-op treatment was not carefully diagnosed. If the necessary precautions were taken and the post-op treatment monitored carefully, my child would definitely still be here. All I want is justice," he said.

The firm representing the two doctors, MacRobert Incorporated, told Newswatch that the matter was heard by the Health Professions Council of South Africa who dismissed it on the basis that no evidence of unprofessional conduct could be established.
