Bringing all things spicy to this year's Heritage Food Festival

The 1860 Heritage Centre will bring a classic food festival back to Durban.

Food is an integral part of our heritage, bringing not only tastes and smells to the fore, but personal and family narratives of specific dishes and delicacies.

Through the period of indenture, many Indian dishes - from curries to rotis and sweetmeats - have now become part of South Africa’s cuisine culture and are enjoyed by all palettes.

As the country celebrates Heritage Month this September, it’s time to whet your appetite and take those taste buds on a journey.

Join us for a unique experience at the Heritage Food Festival on Saturday, 16 September, at the 1860 Heritage Centre from 9am to 4pm.

The festival includes food stalls, food demonstrations, a tug-of-war family challenge, tours of the centre, and live radio broadcasts.

It promises to be a fun day out for the entire family and an opportunity to engage with our heritage in a meaningful way.

The day's line-up kicks off with guided tours of the centre from 9am to 12 noon. Food stalls will be open from 11am with vendors selling traditional favourites, including pulisadam, mutton breyani, khichdi, and falooda.

You can catch these dynamic chefs in action with live demonstrations from 1.30pm - Simmi Ramnarain, Selvan Naidoo, Priyanka Chenderdeo, Prem Pather, Jimmy Moodley, and Neha Valjee.

We're rounding off on an exciting note with a family tug-of-war challenge. The winning family bags a restaurant voucher to the value of R2,500.

We look forward to your company in celebrating the foods that shape us as a diverse nation.

The event starts on Saturday 16 September from 09:00 until 19:00.

Entrance fee is only R10, and pensioners enter for free. For more information contact Yatin Singh on 0723314017
