Celebrating the life of Tom Petty on what would've been his 72nd birthday

Tom Petty is one of the greatest rock stars that ever lived. ECG celebrates his life with a special music tribute.

Tom Petty was born 72 years ago in Gainesville, Florida, USA. 

The iconic rock star died at the age of 66 due to a drug overdose. 

Petty told Rolling Stone that he knew from a young age that he was destined to do music. 

“It's a strange to say out loud, but I always felt destined to do this, from a very young age I felt this was going to happen to me,” he said during the interview.

The singer, guitarist, and songwriter started singing in the 1970s with the band, Mudcrutch.

This band later broke up and Petty formed another group with Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Ron Blair, and Stan Lynch. This group is called Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. They released their first album in 1976. 

It is this same group that made Petty rise to international fame. 

Some of the hit songs released by the band include: 'Breakdown', 'Don’t Do Me Like That', 'Refugee', 'Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around', and 'Don’t Come Around Here No More'. 

The band has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Petty's first solo album, 'Full Moon Fever', was released in 1989. It reached No. 3 on the charts and sold multi-platinum.

He released three solo albums. 

Petty has also received multiple awards, including four Grammy Awards.
