Billy Joel is mourning the loss of his dearest musical hero, Gordon Lightfoot.

The Canadian singer-songwriter passed away on 1 May 2023 at age 84. According to CNN, he died of natural causes.

He released hits such as 'If You Could Read My Mind' - which received a Grammy nomination for 'Best Male Pop Vocal Performance' - and 'The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald' - which reached No. 2 on the Billboard charts.

Joel, who was born 9 May in 1949, called Gordon his musical hero.

He says his songs were the heart of Canada.

The singer shared a video of himself playing the piano and singing Gordon's 'If You Could Read My Mind' on his social media pages.

"Sad morning over here. Rest easy Gordon Lightfoot. So sad to hear of the death of Gordon Lightfoot. He was a lifelong musical hero of mine. His songs were the heart of Canada. R.I.P," Joel wrote on Facebook.

He also paid tribute by playing his 1974 classic ‘Sundown’ at his Madison Square Garden concert on Friday night in New York.

“You might know him from the hit records he had. I want to say ‘thank you,’ and rest in peace Gordon Lightfoot,” he said during the show.
