What is making the scientific community even more excited is the possibility of learning how the reproductive process has evolved over the years.
The ancient cells were found inside of a female ostracod preserved, which was discovered inside of amber (fossilised tree resin).
This suggests that the tiny crustacean had enjoyed some time with her mate before being trapped.

Up until now, the oldest fossilised sperm ever found had been 50-million-years-old and was from a worm cocoon found in Antarctica.
The specimen also provided more information and insight into the previously unknown and mysterious crustacean, now named Myanmarcypris hui.
What an incredible, and entertaining, discovery!
New: 100 million-year-old sperm is the oldest ever found. And it's giant. https://t.co/dN3mFDz7FD
