POV: Are 'promposals' a thing in South Africa or is it just popular overseas?
A proposal for the one you want to take to prom, or in SA, a matric dance...
It's matric dance season and we know how teenagers can get during this time of year. We can describe it as the high school version of a wedding or should we say proposal.
Our motivation behind comparing it to a proposal comes from the overflowing content online which many are calling 'promposals'.
A promposal is a teenager's version of asking the girl you like out to prom, if it was in South Africa, then it would be matric dance-posal? Just doesn't have the same ring to it, does it?

We have noticed the videos on TikTok with so many teens going over-the-top with their 'promposals'.
But we were wondering if this was just something that happened abroad, or is it happening with our local teenagers too?
Well, to answer your question, we have found many of students abroad, but we have managed to find some South African students too.

This is the one that we found from a student in Johannesburg, and our favourite part was that it didn't follow the conventional boy asking girl script.
This young lady asked a young man to her matric dance, and from the looks of it, he was a complete gentleman about it.

What does leave us a bit shook about the whole trend is the sheer over dramatisation of it all.
The cinematic nature of some of these videos and the screaming and hype from the 'extras' aka the other students is somewhat overdone.
Maybe it's just us, but we feel that this trend is taking over the innocence in asking someone out to a dance.
