“My mother-in-law changed my baby’s name while I was unconscious after the C-section”

A new mom details
the harrowing discovery that her mother-in-law changed her child’s name while
she was unconscious moments after giving birth.
It’s a tale as old as time. For decades, mother-in-laws have often come on too strong when it comes to their child’s marriage. It’s something that has caused a rift within many marriages. But one woman went too far after she changed her grandson’s name while the mother of the child was unconscious after her C-section.
While relatives always have an opinion on what a child should be named, it’s always the parents’ decision what finally gets written on the birth certificate. But, for one new mom, her mother-in-law stepped in while she was unconscious moments after giving birth and has turned to social media for advice.
The mom left an anonymous letter on Slate.com's Care and Feeding advice column, where she explains that she and her partner picked their son's first name together, but she let him add a middle name that he liked. The catch? It needed to be spelled a certain way.

The couple chose Finley as their son’s middle name but the mom says that she wanted it to be written with an 'e' instead of an 'a'.
But, while she was recovering from her C-section, her husband went behind her back and changed it to Finlay – and admits that her mother-in-law sent him on a ‘guilt-trip’ and persuaded him to do it.
“Dear Care and Feeding, my son is two months old, and I just discovered my husband spelled our son's middle name as 'Finlay' instead of 'Finley' on all his legal documentation. I, of course, am furious, because I told him I was fine with the middle name, but it had to be spelled Finley - and he agreed before our son was ever born," she says in her letter.

The mom admits that she started to suspect something when her mother-in-law sent a Christmas card with the incorrect spelling and her suspicions were confirmed when she filed the birth certificate for safe keeping.
"He just let me keep believing for two months that our son's middle name was spelt Finley when it legally isn't," the mom continues. "He says he regretted it as soon as the card came and has been afraid to tell me.
"Apparently his mother guilt-tripped him into doing
this while I was asleep after my emergency C-section. Keep in mind she lives a
few states away, so this was all over the phone. She tried to convince him to
give our son a first name that I very much hated, saying that I would 'get mad,
but get over it'. My husband thought changing his first name was too much but
apparently gave in to spelling his middle name the way his mum wanted. She
thinks that 'Finlay' is more masculine that 'Finley'."

The woman asked readers if she should confront her mother-in-law about the incident.
"What in the entire f*** is up with your husband? He's got to decide if you are his co-parent or if his mother is. And until he makes that decision, he can't be trusted. Period,” the agony aunt responded, warning that a “fistfight” may not be the correct approach.
“Purposefully changing the name of your child on a birth certificate behind your back is pretty close to a fireable offence if you ask me,” she adds. “I'm mad just reading about this. You and your kid deserve so much better."
