'Missing' hiker ignores calls from private number

Do you answer calls or texts from unrecognised numbers?
We know many people who religiously don't answer calls when they do not recognise the number calling. Big respect to them for standing their ground. Perhaps they experienced something and that is why they have chosen not to answer?
But what about if you were lost in the mountains, where it's most likely you don't have everyone's number saved to your phone, because you are away from home, what happens then?
A man who was out on a hike on Colorado’s highest mountain went missing around 8pm on the 18th of October. When he didn't return from his hike to the place that he was staying at, the search and rescue team were concerned.
"Repeated attempts to contact the man through calls, texts and voicemail messages went ignored." (The Guardian)
It is believed that the reason he did not answer the calls were because they were from an unknown number.
Just as a second rescue team was dispersed, the team discovered that the hiker had returned to his lodge. The hiker was said to have been oblivious to the fact that everyone was looking for him.
Talk about missing the call...
This man had a whole search party looking for him and chose to stick to his guns and not answer that call. Have you ever done something similar?
