KZN is the second worst housebreaking hotspot in South Africa

As South Africans, the only thing we can say with surety is that crime is something we have all had to deal with. That doesn't mean that we are throwing shade to our very own home sweet home, but it is a reality.

"While housebreaking is the most common crime experienced by households in the country over the last five years, the number of households that experienced housebreaking was down by 17% in 2020/21 from the previous year. 

"An estimated one million incidences of housebreaking occurred since 2016, affecting 809,000 households." (The South African)

Sounds like a lot, right? We're not sure if that makes us feel any better or worse. But the numbers have also indicated that around 56% of those households have reported those break-ins to the police.

The worst affected province was Gauteng, which recorded 238,000 incidents of housebreaking. Western Cape had the highest percentage with 6.7% of homes that were targeted. 

And KwaZulu-Natal came in second with the amount of break-ins and the percentage. The news on the stats ground is that the province with the least amount overall was the Free State (with 12,000 break-ins and 1.3% homes targeted).

The thing is that as much as these stats can be construed as scary, we have come to learn that it is a part of life. All you can do is try to be more aware with your overall home safety and security. 

If it means upping your security protocols, then by all means do it, but remember to be vigilant and aware of your surroundings, as sometimes, that helps more than the high tech security systems.
