Groom says no to marriage after finding out the bride eats with her left hand

All communities have different cultural perceptions and beliefs, as well as stereotypes. When it comes to Indians, one of them is left-handedness. Many people in India (and in South Africa) have a negative association with left-handedness.
But when it comes to weddings, there is always a sense of excitement and love that gets everyone feeling good.
Not at this Indian wedding, though...
"A man from Dandeli, situated in the Indian state of Karnataka, is making headlines after he refused to marry his bride as she uses her left hand to eat. In India, it is against etiquette to eat with one's left hand and is considered disrespectful." (Geo TV)
The bride's family informed the groom and his family that due to a disability, she was unable to eat with her right hand. After refusing to marry her and not budging at all, the police were called in to help with the situation.
The police sought out counselling for the couple, and eventually things took a turn for the best. The groom decided to marry the bride.
But more importantly, if we are stuck on the premise that eating with your left hand would make you want to break a bond with someone you were about to spend your life with, is that even an acceptable reason in this day and age?

Of course, we understand that every culture has their own set of beliefs, and in no way are we damning anyone for their beliefs. As much as it is important to be considerate and open minded about the facts, there is also the ideal of being open minded and accepting.
After all that is what evolution is all about. Change, adaptation, becoming, and moving into unchartered territories...
