The Voice SA has arrived!
We caught up with talent, Thembeka Mnguni, and Gavin Welsh from the Gus Brown Band. We also chatted to Kahn Morbee from The Parlotones, who is one of the judges.
Thembeka, who is currently working at a recruitment agency to make ends meet, is hoping that The Voice SA will revive her once promising career in showbiz. Many years ago she toured the world with theatre impresario Pieter Toerien’s productions of the musicals Grease and High School Musical and she was nominated for a Naledi Award for Best Newcomer.
Thembeka spoke out about the prejudice the music industry has against woman who do not fit a preconceived idea of what a star should look like, and how this has impacted on her. She also spoke about being a single mother of an autistic child, and why she chose Karen Zoid instead of Lira, whom she regards as one of her music idols.
Gavin Welsh is no stranger to Durban music lovers. He is the frontman for The Gus Brown Band. He didn't make it through, so we asked him about this. Kahn was also put in the hot seat when we asked him why he didn't turn for Gavin. Find out how thy came up with their name "The Gus Brown Band'' We also got a surprise call from Gavin's mom.
We also got Thembeka and Gavin to sing for us. Gavin's was a little more serious, as we launched #BringBackGavin We are hoping that one of the judges will use their wildcard to return him to the show.
It was one of the best evenings spent in studio. Take a listen below.
