Watch: Tears of joy as Durban man sees colour for first time
Updated | By Damon Beard
This is one birthday gift that Ross Morum will never forget for the rest of his life.
Listen to the podcast as Ross shares his experience of what he saw when he put on the Enchroma glasses, then read more below:
Can you imagine being able to see colour for the first time? I mean, think about it, really think about it. The ability to see colours is something that most of us take for granted.
Imagine looking at a bunch of fruit where every item looks like a shade of green and you can't tell the difference between that picture and a colour picture. Well, that's how it was for 28-year-old Durbanite Ross Morum.
Morum is colourblind, which is a vision deficiency which makes it difficult to distinguish between certain colours. Colours such as red, green, brown, and orange all look the same to him.

Enchroma glasses have a colour correcting lens which helps a person to see the colours they can't see. Ross' wife and friends clubbed together to buy Ross a pair of these glasses which cost just over R9,000 from the USA. The glasses are changing people's lives around the world.
Sitting in the popular Durban Botanic Gardens, surrounded by an array of colour, Ross received his gift and slowly unwrapped it. Sobbing even before he puts on the glasses, it's almost as though time stands still when he puts them on. It's almost as though they're not working, but then he sees a bunch of red flowers and his world comes alive - filled with the reds and greens of the outside world.
I can't believe what you guys get to see- Ross Morum
Ross told me that he cannot tell the difference between these pictures. To us they look different but to him, they both look the same to him.

It's so amazing that something so simple as colour is something that we take for granted. Ross' year was made with just one pair of glasses, which will change the way he sees things for the rest of his life.
Ross came to the studio to come say hi. He also brought the EnChroma glasses with him.
