Social media is going crazy over Jesse Williams’ BET Awards speech
Actor and activist Jesse Williams didn't hold back when
accepting the Humanitarian Award.
The BET Awards took place on Sunday night and social media went crazy over Jesse Williams’ speech at the ceremony.
The Grey’s Anatomy actor took to the stage to accept the honour of humanitarian of the year. But, in a politically charged speech, Williams said that the accolade was not for him.
“This is for the real organisers all over the country. The activists, the civil rights attorneys, the struggling parents, the families, the teachers of students that are realising that a system built to divide and impoverish and destroy us cannot stand if we do,” he said.
He also paid homage to the unsung heroes (or heroines in this case) by thanking “the black women who have spent their lifetimes dedicated to nurturing everyone before themselves”.
