Should you be recognised for putting in extra hours at work?
Updated | By Damon Beard
"There are not enough hours in the day" is a common phrase used by many in today's hectic work life. But are all those extra hours simply for your benefit, or does it call for some form of recognition?
Listen to KZN reacting to the topic, or read the details under the podcast;
How important is recognition in your workplace?
Let me ask you this - do you know when National Employee Appreciation Day is? In case you didn't know, it is usually celebrated on the first Friday of March.
To be honest, does it even matter, because if showing appreciation is part of your company’s culture, it should happen every day of the year, right?
Let’s face it, appreciation is a fundamental human need, and we respond to appreciation because it confirms that others value our work. Am I right in saying that we all want to be respected and valued by others for our contribution? The little 'pat on the back' really goes a long way.

How many times have you put in the effort by working overtime because there’s just too much work to deal with? Does your boss or organisation even reward you for doing so?
I wanted to find out what people think about getting recognised for working overtime, so I took to East Coast Radio's Twitter and put up a poll to get to the bottom of it all.
See the results of the poll below:

It's like wanting to be recognised for praying out of church service hours. At one point you gotta do it. Do it for yourself

Does not happen. I have to work from 7:30 to 16:00 but start at 06:00 to miss the traffic to cape town cbd. We are not allowed to leave before 16:00 even though there is a electronic trace that i start work immediately.

You should be recognized by your efforts and hard work. Working extra hours can not prove your willingness to work

Is recognition in your workplace given and is it important to you?

Are you ever given that pat on the back, a little 'thank you', 'we appreciate you’, or do your efforts go unnoticed?
