The world's largest online retailer is coming to SA

While the world is very clearly obsessed with Amazon and it's very obviously the leading online retailer, they have not yet chosen to directly distribute within South Africa.
Although a few of our local retailers might be breathing a major sigh of relief, Amazon has not completely steered clear of SA.

The global tech giant is moving to Cape Town!
It opened its first development centre in the Mother City in 2004, but the operation was tiny and barely noticeable.

Now they plan on solidifying their place in SA by establishing a much bigger headquarters with its newly confirmed mega-development.
The city has given the green light to the River Club mixed-use development, which is set at a whopping R4-billion and this is what Amazon SA will be calling home.

According to BusinessTech, it is predicted that from the construction phase alone, over 5,239 jobs will be created and in the end, through induced and indirect jobs, they will have created up to 19,000 job opportunities.
The Amazon headquarters will set up shop and will focus on engineering innovative tech solutions, as well as being the base of operations for the whole African continent.
Business Insider reports that over the last ten years the company has successfully boosted its capacity and in 2020 they announced that they will be hiring 3,000 people in South Africa.

At this point in time, their South African job portal has listed 158 different job opportunities while also offering a variety of internship programmes for any current student who is enrolled in a Bachelors or Masters Degree in computer engineering, computer science or any field that is closely related.
They are also offering entry-level positions in the Amazon customer service sector and if you would like to apply they have more good news - location does not matter and you can apply from anywhere in South Africa!

While the news of job creation is always welcomed, we can't help but wonder how long it will be until we can set up our Alexas and experience the thrill of Amazon Prime...
