A hamster is a solitary burrowing rodent with a short tail and large cheek pouches for carrying food, native to Europe and North Asia.
Although this animal isn’t native to South Africa, it is a very common family pet.

A Twitter thread has sparked an interesting conversation surrounding these animals and why their deaths are so tragic.
We hear stories of hamsters escaping the cage, getting eaten or taken by other animals and other major accidents that occur.
