ECR will be celebrating its 25th birthday soon and it had us wondering, what else will be turning 25 in 2021?

In 1996, East Coast Radio was born!

While that makes it a pretty iconic year, there are also so many other moments that shaped history.

It was the year that a certain British group started spicing up our lives, it was the year the Queen of the North was born, and there might have even been a cloned sheep situation.

If you want to sound like the smartest person at the braai or you just want to expand on your general knowledge, then take a look at this list of 25 things that happened 25 years ago:

1. The Spice Girls release their debut single 'Wannabe'!

2. On the 5th of July, Dolly the sheep, the first mammal to be cloned, was born.

3. The Nintendo 64 video game system made its debut.

4. 'Cats' is performed for the 6,138th time in London, surpassing the record of Broadway's longest-running musical, 'A Chorus Line'.

5. The Daily Show, which is now hosted by our very own Trevor Noah, premiered for the first time on July 21st:

6. IBM computer Deep Blue becomes the first computer to win a game of chess against a reigning (human) chess champion, Gary Kasparov.

7. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees were: David Bowie; Jefferson Airplane; Little Willie John; Gladys Knight and the Pips; Pink Floyd; The Shirelles; The Velvet Underground; Pete Seeger; and Tom Donahue.

8. British boy band Take That officially announce that they are disbanding, prompting the UK government to set up counselling phone lines.

9. Gene Kelly, American actor ('An American in Paris'; 'On The Town') and dancer ('Singin' in the Rain')

10. The cult classic, 'Trainspotting', directed by Danny Boyle based on the book by Irvine Welsh, starring Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle and Jonny Lee Miller opened in cinemas.

11. South Africa's Constitutional Assembly adopts permanent post-apartheid constitution

12. Legendary free internet e-mail service Hot Mail launches

13. Tamil romantic comedy film "Poove Unakkaga" released directed by Vikraman, starring Sangita and Vijay in his breakthrough role

14. Jay-Z releases his debut studio album "Beyond Reasonable Doubt" with Roc-A-Fella Records and Priority Records
