It's weird to think back and realise there was a time before emojis ever existed!

How did we communicate our true feelings on WhatsApp or make our Instagram captions more exciting before emojis came into our lives?

Now they are being used for albums covers (here's looking at you Drake) and everything in-between.

But while we're still trying to figure out what some of the original emojis mean, since even the sad face's story is stranger than we thought, there are new emojis being added to the list every single year.

And we get excited every time asking ourselves "what could they be adding this time?"

We've seen them jump on trends by adding the much-needed millennial necessity, the avocado, and even become more inclusive by adding different races and gender options to already existing emojis.

Now, in honour of World Emoji Day, the emoji reference site, Emojipedia, has released images of the latest batch of emojis that are being finalised with the help of the Unicode Consortium, a non-profit that oversees emoji standards and plays a role in new releases.

The consortium still has to approve but Emojipedia put it all together in visual form for users to get an idea of what to expect from the new batch.

The Unicode 14.0 finalist list is aiming at being even more inclusive than previous versions. Not only will this update include a gender-neutral alternative to the prince and princess emoji but they are also looking to add 15 various handshake emoji skin tone combinations.

Finally, the one that has received the most attention is the pregnant man and pregnant person emojis. This is to help recognise and acknowledge that transgender men and non-binary people can also be pregnant.

Previous updates have also aimed for more inclusivity by adding the transgender flag, over 200 mixed-skin-tone combinations for couples and even added a woman with a beard.

Some other 14.0 options also include a melting face, a low battery symbol (much-needed indeed) and a face holding back tears (relatable content).

Here is a look at the new emojis that are likely to be approved:

The new additions are set to hit operating systems next year.

Microsoft has also announced that it will be updating its 1,800 emojis and redesigning it all.

We don't know about you but we can't wait to spam our friends and family with a bunch of new emojis!
