New parenting tactic?

A possibly progressive parenting tactic is making waves due to this famous family.

Actress and TV personality Khanyi Mbau’s parenting style is under scrutiny after she revealed that her daughter lives in her own apartment at age 15.

She revealed all during a sit-down dinner on the new Netflix reality show, 'Young, Famous & African'.

Khanukani (Khanz) Mbau is the daughter of Khanyi with public figure Mandla Mthembu. She is 15 years old and is seemingly quite independent.

Khanyi says: “We allow Khanz to be herself, if she wants to try stuff, I mean anything… we let her try it. Cause we want to see who this person is.”

A question was raised during the Netflix show by fellow cast member and TV presenter Andile Ncube, who asked Khanyi where she "drew the line" since her daughter was just a teenager.

“But then where do you draw the line? What happens when she’s curious about sex at 15?” asked the father of two.

Khanyi assertively responded: “Virginity can be lost or it can be stolen. To lose it when you are ready and it's a boy you think you are going to marry, you give it away. You love this guy, you are 15, you think you are going to marry him… you give it away."

“I said there’s no age for it. You can give away your virginity tomorrow night. It’s worse because you sleep in your own apartment,” Khanyi said.

Many have been in disagreement with this parenting style, including Annie Macaulay-Idibia, a Nigerian model and mother of two.

Annie states: “She’s too young. This thing didn’t sit well with me. I didn’t like what I was hearing. She is still young, she might not be able to make the right decisions. Regardless of how you speak with her, she’s still 15.”

Clearly many are sticking to their traditional views that her daughter is still young and requires an environment with a parental presence.

It's a very difficult thing having a teenage daughter, especially when you're in the public eye.

Progressive parenting can sometimes work in the kid's favour or other times be indulgent, selfish or submissive.

Many users have shared their sentiments:

  • “How will you teach/talk about sex with a person you even scared to ask go wash the dishes?”
  • "This could be positive or negative all depends on what Khanyi saw in her to feel she can handle all this responsibility. Good for them as long as no lines will be blurred forgetting who's the parent and who is daughter."
  • "Each to their own hey, no formula in parenting and life in general what works for you doesn't have to make sense to others."
  • "The rights and responsibilities of a parent 24/7 include the following elements namely: caring of the child, maintaining contact with the child, to act as a guardian over the child and to contribute to the maintenance of the child."
  • "The child is still too young to stay alone and be left to make her own decisions in life."
  • "It is not life if we do not explore new ways of doing things."

There you have it, there may be two sides to this situation but there will never be a definite answer as to how one must parent a child.
