The devastating effects of the global pandemic and continuous mismanagement of funds has resulted in an influx of retrenchments at the public broadcaster.
SABC News anchor, Desiree Chauke, was left in tears whilst she read a story that the public broadcaster had concluded retrenchments.

Over 600 employees at the SABC were retrenched on Wednesday, this after the board announced last year that it would undergo a retrenchment policy that would trim a R2.4-billion annual salary bill of 3,167 employees.
The weight of this news was understandably very emotional for Desiree, who broke down in tears in the middle of delivering her news bulletin.

Whilst reading the bulletin, Desiree commented: "It [SABC] will transition to a new structure from the 1st of April… I apologise I’m not able to finish that, can I ask my producers to take a break.”
The moment was shared across social media by viewers who sympathised with not only Desiree, but the 600 employees who had just lost their jobs.
