Bongani Urban explains why he doesn’t think as South Africans

I personally identify myself as South African first, and African second. I was born on this continent and I am proud to say I am African, but as a South African, I think we enjoy being part of Africa when it’s convenient for us. Maybe it’s for the novelty aspect or when we’re in a major football tournament?
You never hear the French saying: “Germany won the World Cup, well done, they’re from Europe.” It’s only Africa that does that. Don’t get me wrong, I actually agree with this sentiment and will always support an African nation over any other, but again this is only out of convenience.

I think our term for "foreigner" is also used very loosely and incorrectly here. We treat German, French, Americans, and Australians like they’re gold when they’re in South Africa, but what about that Malawian guy who cuts your grass? What about the Zimbabwean who is now a school teacher at your child's school? They’re treated like dirt. If you don’t believe me, then listen to this full podcast and decide for yourself.
