Listener lied about terminal illness for attention
Updated | By Bongani Urban
Bongani Urban received a confession from a listener about
how she lied to her friends and family about a terminal illness to get
attention - and now she wants to come clean.
My producer received an email from a listener a few weeks ago where the woman explained that she faked her terminal illness in order to gain attention from her friends and family. My first reaction was to ignore the email because to me we’re giving the listener exactly what they want, attention. But the longer I thought about it and the more I spoke to my friends, I realised that this is possibly something that happens more often than we’d like to admit.

I had to put it out there and see what you had to say, as there were many of you who said that you can sympathise. We got a call from a young lady who admitted that from time to time she enjoys the attention she gets from being sick. She went further and said that she pretends to fall ill in order to get the attention she craves. Another caller said that his ex-wife used to overdose on pills to get the attention, even though she could have seriously caused harm to herself or killed herself.
This was one of those topics that surprised me with each caller. There are way too many people out there that fake illness. This is something that needs to be spoken about more.
