Bongani Urban: Sometimes black people use the race card when it’s not needed
Updated | By Bongani Urban
After seeing all the social media comments about the Airbnb guest thrown down the stairs, Bongani Urban thinks that sometimes black people use the race card when it’s not needed.
I read through all the comments on social media when the video hit the internet. At first, I thought to myself this is a guy who has was aggravated to the point that he physically pushed a lady. I think this was raw emotion and frustration directed at someone. I do not think this was a racist attack, nor do I think this was gender-based. I think there is a lot more to the video than meets the eye. What did she do or say to make him this angry? But do I think that he deserves the punishment that comes his way? Absolutely.
But looking at all the racial comments that surfaced it got me thinking that sometimes we, as black people, are so quick to point out the fact that he was white and she was black, so it’s a race thing. If I think of a time a white guy pushed in front of a black guy in the shopping queue, the black guy immediately reacted poorly and labelled the white guy a racist. Instead of thinking that maybe the white guy was just a rude human being, he went straight for the race card. Do you think this is across all races? Do we as South Africans tend to blame everything on race?
I put this out to air and this is what you had to say. I must admit – some incredible reactions here. Listen to the end.
Here is the video everyone is still talking about.
