Demi Brodie is from KwaZulu-Natal but has been teaching in Shanghai for the last few years and is currently enduring one of the most intense lockdowns in history as China faces a surge in COVID-19 cases.
But, what happens when you test positive for COVID-19 during these stringent regulations? This is where things get very dark.

Demi tested positive for COVID-19 and she was forced into a state-run lockdown facility.
She recounts this traumatic experience as the government continues to censor content, news, and enforce policies that some believe infringe on basic human rights.

According to AFP, China presses ahead with its "magic weapon" zero-Covid strategy, despite mounting economic costs and more signs of public frustration in locked-down Shanghai.

The "zero-COVID" strategy has led to economic pain and disruptions, especially snarled supply chains, with Shanghai struggling to provide fresh food to those confined at home and patients reporting trouble accessing non-Covid medical care.
Speaking to AFP and ECR Newswatch, Joerg Wuttke, president of the EU Chamber of Commerce in China, told The Market NZZ that the priority is clear for officials.
"The mayors, the regional politicians, they all have only one metric right now: Zero Covid."
