The eThekwini Municipality posted via their Facebook page that you will need to apply for special permission if you want to slaughter an animal for religious or traditional reasons.

According to the eThekwini Municipality Facebook post (which has now been deleted), the form is online and seven working days is required for the issuing of the permit. The post also went on to say the application procedure doesn't apply only to residents in suburbs.

This would be applicable to all areas that fall under the eThekwini Municipality's jurisdiction.

The post did outline procedures that people would have had to follow to submit an application for a permission to slaughter. This includes contacting their respective local Environmental Health Services office for an application form.

This whole thing didn't sit too well with people, more so the political parties. Thulisa Ndlela, regional secretary of the ANC Youth League in eThekwini, had made sure that as an organisation they opposed this matter.

"For our people to seek permission to practice their constitutionally culture that is protected is not right at all. We will engage the leadership of the ANC in the region of KZN to instruct the members of the ANC in council for this decision not to be approved", said Ndlela.

Ndlela also made a point to state that to require a permit for practicing culture traditions like slaughtering is an invasion of the sensitive cultural ceremonies that are often performed in African cultures.
