More than 200 new emojis are on their way!

Everyone loves emojis.

They help convey tone on social media and during chats.

They can also add whimsy and joy to any text or post and are just better to look at than boring old plain text.

You won't believe it but emojis were actually first introduced way back when in 1990 as part of the Windows font 'Wingdings' which features a sad and happy smiley face.

Throughout the years the variety of emojis has changed drastically and there are more options than ever before.

The originals might have been very basic but almost every year the various faces, foods, and other icons are becoming more diverse.

This brings us to the latest update.

Within the next month, Apple will be releasing their next operating system update, iOS 14.5, and it will include over 200 new emojis.

One thing that has always been clear with the emoji updates is that it's not just about adding a fun random fruit, like an avocado, it's also about being inclusive, representing all walks of life, and even staying up to date with current events.

With the new batch, there will be a mixture of brand new creations, while many others are just being updated and modified.

The largest group of emojis being updated are the ones representing couples. Until now many of the pairs only had one skin tone - yellow.

Now the 'People Holding Hands', couples kissing, and other pairs can be mixed and matched to showcase the skin tones and genders you want and identify with.

As previously mentioned, these updates usually also stay up to date on what is happening in the world and adapt accordingly.

When school shootings in America became a major issue, the gun emoji was changed to a water gun.

Now, because of COVID-19 and the pandemic, the original syringe emoji, which features blood as well as a few droplets, has been updated to also represent a vaccine syringe.

The new syringe emoji is just plain without any indication of fluids within the syringe.

There are also three new basic, yellow smileys: 'Exhaling Face', 'Face With Spiral Eyes' and 'Face in Clouds'.

They have also added a few new versions of the basic red heart, making them not so basic anymore.

We're definitely excited for this new update and can't wait to play around with all these new emoticons!
