As we draw closer to the yet unknown start date of Every Caller Wins, we've picked out the top five stories featured on the Breakfast Show this week.

1. Substation explosion causes blackouts in parts of eThekwini

According to eThekwini Municipality,  the explosion at the Klaarwater substation led to power outages in some 50% of Durban.

According to ECR Newswatch, areas like Mariannhill, Kloof, Pinetown, Northdene, Gillits, the Bluff, Wentworth and KwaMashu were all affected by the outage.

2. ECR's Sky Tshabalala hosts KZN Sport Awards

The annual KwaZulu-Natal Sports Awards were held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (Durban ICC) on Saturday. 

The awards show recognises and acknowledges the success, and commitment of athletes, teams, coaches, administrators, volunteers, technical officials, media personnel, and sports bodies.

Our very own Sky Tshabalala was given the opportunity to host the KZN Sports Awards. 

Sky has hosted the awards before, but this is the first time in two years that the ceremony is back in full swing.

3. Have you been hacked on social media before?

We have had a chat to three expert opinions on the matter of cyber crime/hacking amid what seems to be a growing trend where hackers gain access to people's social media accounts. 

Yes, we all struggle to keep updating our passwords, but it might just be the difference between getting hacked and a secure account.

We have seen a rise in the number of instances where people's accounts are hacked.

Well, according to IT Governance, cyber security is the application of technologies, processes, and controls to protect networks from cyber attacks.

4. World's tiniest pacemaker inserted at Lenmed Ethekwini Hospital.

History was made in Durban when KwaZulu-Natal cardiologist and electrophysiologist Dr Brian Vezi inserted the world's tiniest pacemaker into a patient.

This all happened at the Lenmed Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre this past week.

After the surgery, Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist, Professor Ashley Chin, spoke about the success of the surgery. 

"This will be the way to go when treating certain patients. We have to still select patients properly for this kind of procedure," said a beaming Prof Chin. 

5. SA private school launches late classes for late sleepers 

According to Business Tech, the school will start a programme called CurroPM, which will allow students to attend school in the afternoon. 

This would be a first SA, as school has traditionally always started in the morning.

Curro’s Durbanville High School will pilot this programme in 2023.

Students at Curro’s Durbanville High School will be able to choose an afternoon learning schedule instead of a morning one - or a hybrid of the two.
