Only extreme foodies would buy this doughnut.
The Manila Social Club, a Brooklyn eatery owned by Filipino brothers Bjorn De La Cruz and Samuel Ware, unveiled The Golden Cristal Ube Donut in an Instagram post that gave the public a first look at the confection, as well as revealing its $100 (R1685) price tag.
De La Cruz, the doughnut's creator, acknowledged the decadent dessert is a publicity ploy.
"It is gimmicky, that is the thing. It's supposed to get attention,
obviously. It's gold on a doughnut! Let's not be coy about this," he reported.
The doughnut contains ube, a purple yam found in several of The Manila Social Club's dishes, as well as vintage Cristal, 24-karat edible gold flakes and gold dust.
"The honey notes from the Cristal pair well with the ube mousse," Ware reported.
The brothers said they have sold more than five dozen of the doughnuts.
