Wife promoted, asks husband to stay at home

A father asked KZN for help on how to deal with being asked to become a stay-at-home dad.

Carol Ofori extends a call out to KZN weekly, asking them to share their stories on 'Am I the Skebenga'.

And this one really hit a chord with people. Just days before Father's Day, a dad called out to Carol and KZN for help on how to handle a personal matter he was facing.

He shared how his wife had received a promotion and that since she was going to be earning much more money, she asked him to leave his low-income job and become a stay-at-home dad.

Unfortunately, he was in his feelings about this request.

Mostly because he was afraid of how others would view him. He asked KZN how they felt about it all.

Check out the story below.

Check out some of the comments from KZNers:

Reishina Naidoo:

"Children and Housework are not commodities to be passed off or paid for. Herein lies the historical problem. She can pay for that role. You are a Husband, a Co-parent and her Lover and friend. Meet her at that level and you will live happily ever after. Seeing staying at home as taking care of kids and housework and cooking is a deeply misogynistic mindset. This mindset ejects a man's value to a 21st-century woman earning good money. Your value in her life must be real... She can pay for everything else."

Vivian D'Alton:

"Instead of asking a bunch of strangers for their 2-cents worth of advice, why not sit down with your wife & have an open & honest discussion with one another, don’t be afraid to show your emotions / fears etc. I’m sure your wife doesn’t want you to feel emasculated, maybe you 2 can come up with a plan where everyone wins, especially the kids. This is a conversation & decision that only the 2 of you can make, it’s your lives & no-one else’s. I wish the 2 of you the best of luck & I pray it works out for all.

P.S. This is just a personal opinion, & it’s something I apply in my life. When it comes to your kids & their safety & happiness, you & your ego (masculinity / femininity) need to come second (as long as it is not to your detriment). Depending on their ages, why not include them in your conversation & decision?

Lastly, you are not a skebenga for feeling this way, it is absolutely 100% natural. I truly hope it all works out for the best for you."

Kevin Hall:

"Definitely a skebenga of note, be a MODERN MAN and step up to the plate & take care of your kids. Nothing wrong with the woman providing! It's the new modern age!"
