As much as we all know that crime is serious across the world and, in particular, in our country, it is something else when you are placed in the midst of a criminal act and your family are placed in harm's way.

To be a victim of crime and come out on as a victor is a truly emotional experience. Most especially because you are put in a position where you are not in control and that can be extremely scary.

Sadly, when it comes to home invasions, many families rarely have positive outcome stories and as much as that is a reality, it is inhumane and leaves us feeling angry and to some extent fearful.

But this story is one that we hope will restore your sense of bravery. It is about a family in Redcliffe, who were attacked by four criminals, who had jumped over their fence and tried to gain entry into their home.

The Reaction Unit South Africa received a distress call on Monday, around 1:18pm, of a robbery in progress in a Redcliffe home.

"He explained that he, his 70 year old wife, 4 year old granddaughter and her mother were in the house when four suspects entered the yard. The robbers bent the security gate and were attempting to kick down the door. The elderly victim held the door from inside the house. His 4 year old granddaughter locked herself in the bathroom." Thankfully, the grandfather was able to block off the door so that they were not able to enter the home. And after some time, the criminals gave up and left. As much as the family was not harmed physically, the trauma around the incident was extremely damaging.

We know that life can be stressful, especially with all the things going on right now. But sometimes just staying grateful for our safety and security, and the well-being of our family, is what life is about.

This grandfather had to stay calm for his family, he had to be brave amidst all the danger and the bad thoughts that were going through his mind, and for that, we have to recognise his courage. More than that, we must walk by faith and always try to lead with courage and calmness, rather than panic.

In light of 16 Days of Activism, we commend this elderly member of our community for acting as a hero in this case and that too without the use of any violence. Let's choose to rise above the crime and the violence and walk by faith.
