#Unshaken: Reservoir Hills grandmother: "I believe I’m a strong woman"
Ron Naidoo, a Reservoir Hills resident, has become a community activist against the unclean environment that is taking over her area.
After the unrest that we all experienced last month, it has been amazing to see how many Durbanites have picked themselves up, dusted off all the dirt and damage, and have regained their sense of hope.
We have consciously decided to strive forward and make a change. Becoming agents of change is part of being South African, so regardless of our roots, we naturally come together to stand up for our communities, especially when we can see that our communities need a voice of action and upliftment.
One particular person who is actively making a change in her community is Ron Naidoo. She is a professional hairdresser and even ran her own salon in Reservoir Hills for many years. Ron prides herself on the reputation she held in the community in her profession.
In my hairdressing career, I was known as Ron the Don, because I gave it my all and I was very meticulous in what I did. It was my passion and not just my job.
As a community activist for her community of Reservoir Hills, she also added that she feels passionate about seeing the change in her area. Ron was not happy with the way her neighbourhood has been looking. The illegal dumping and general situation of dirty streets made her feel sad that her area, which was once considered such a "larney" area.
I believe I’m a strong woman as I’m never afraid to speak my mind irrespective of who you are. What surprises most people is that I’m a grandmother and I could very well be spending my quality time with my family yet here I am just randomly cleaning up rubbish from the streets.
In celebrating women that remain Unshaken no matter what comes their way, we definitely consider Ron Naidoo a true example of what it means to be unshaken in such times.
She is not just a grandmother who speaks her mind, but she is also a community member who has decided to use her voice and her time to stand up for a cause that is close to her heart. Cleaning up the streets of her neighbourhood is her way of service and shows how one person can be the change in the world...
We need to get the message out and keep the momentum of keeping our surrounds clean and report all illegal activities. Let’s reclaim our sanity. We cannot get stuck in a mentality that this is the new normal.
