Schools in Australia are banning birthday cakes because they’re ‘unhealthy’

Birthday celebrations in schools around New South Wales in Australia have been a little gloomy recently after several schools in the district have decided to ban birthday cakes because they’re ‘unhealthy’.

Wollondilly Anglican College, the school leading the ban, says that creamy frosting, moist spongey cakes, yummy ice-cream cakes, and other edible treats will no longer be allowed at birthday parties held on school property due to health concerns.

"The number of birthday treats coming into the College each day is causing concern," parents at the school were told via a newsletter. "Most weeks see a birthday or two from each class, sometimes several on one day. This makes it difficult to promote our healthy eating policy amongst the junior years."

Lambton South Public, Manly Village Public School, and Bishop Tyrell Anglican College have all jumped on the bandwagon, with some adding that all birthday foods could be an allergy risk and that they were not prepared to take the risk.

However, this doesn’t mean that the kids can’t celebrate their birthdays at the schools. Parents are simply being told to give their kids healthy treats and give enough so they can share among their peers.

Nutritionist Kristen Beck has warned parents that removing these important moments in a child’s life could backfire spectacularly.

"I think the worst thing you can do with a kid is say you can't have that because they want it more," she said in an interview. "It is a matter of not making a big deal about it, by just having a small amount of (cake) and making sure that they are filling up on the healthy stuff."
