National Oceans Month: A Cape Town artist creates a sculpture out of used coffee capsules

Art is something that can be quite subjective, but when it comes to art that is inventive and helps the environment, then we have to say that we are somewhat left surprised at the talent that many South Africans and Africans possess.
A Cape Town sculpture artist, Godfrey Dambuleni, runs a studio in Salt River. He is formerly from Zimbabwe and has been living in South Africa for the past 23 years, MSN reports.
When Joanne Selby, the general manager at the Table Bay Hotel, heard about Godfrey, she commissioned him to create a replica of their monumental Oscar the Seal.
The seal named Oscar has a special story to the Table Bay Hotel and hence there was an effort here to recreate the gold seal that welcomes guests at the entrance of the hotel.
Godfrey uses a range of materials to create his sculptures, the main one being empty Nespresso capsules, which are cleaned and flattened before use. Other materials include recycled tins, sheet metal, and bicycle chains.
He says that the capsules are easy to use as they can be sculpted to form different shapes. He said that the coffee grinds are cleaned out of the capsules and used by his team as fertiliser. We are loving this form of sustainable art.
I have been using Nespresso capsules for almost five years, making elephants, rhinos, human beings and more.
This was Godfrey's first seal sculpture and he used the used capsules from the hotel, so the story is very much a part of the recreation when it comes to this artwork as well.
We love this partnered initiative, it is truly a commemoration to good art, sustainable forms of art, and being more green and environmentally friendly. Here's to more legendary pieces of art...
