This Madiba Day, the 18th of July, dedicate what you can to make South Africa a better place...
Mandela Day is a day that brings us together and allows us to use what we have to help those that don't have much. It encourages change amongst society and pushes us to act every day of the year, not just on the 18th of July.
This year, Chefs with Compassion have challenged South Africans to participate in an initiative where we all come together to make 67,000 litres of soup.
"In 2020, in a remarkable display of the true spirit of Mandela Day, over 300 chefs stood proudly behind their stoves, united despite the devastation of their industry, taking collective action to put their heart where their passion lies – feeding people – and sending a clear and unequivocal message of the indomitable spirit of the chef. The result… the target of 67 000 litres of soup was exceeded, and instead, 77 455 litres was cooked, serving 309 820 cups of soup to hungry people in 10 cities," the CWC website states.
This year, Chefs with Compassion have embarked on a new mission. They want to surpass their target and have opened up the challenge of cooking 67,000 litres of soup to five different categories of South Africans, from varied sectors, challenging them to dedicate their 67 minutes towards their cause.
The aim is to cook food for vulnerable communities, raise awareness of the fact that 10-million tonnes of food goes to waste every year, while 18-million people go to sleep hungry every day.
The five categories include Hotels, Culinary Schools, Kitchens, Home Cooks, and Corporates. The aim here is to challenge these sectors to clean out their pantries and turn their leftovers into healthy and nutritious soup.
The Chefs with Compassion initiative will also bring light to rescuing food that can still be used by the above sectors. This way food wastage can be eliminated and used for a greater purpose. The above numbers have left us feeling super surprised at the amount of food that goes to waste every year.
What will you be doing for your #67minutes this Madiba Day?
