Fezile Mdletshe chats to Carol Ofori about this massive
moment in her career.
The 2021 Olympics are set to take place in Tokyo, Japan later this year after being postponed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
Now, as the games draw nearer, the final touches are being put in place – including the design of the official South African kit. Fezile Mdletshe opens up to Carol Ofori about her part in the process.
The Durban Fashion Fair class of 2020, which was trained by expert mentors at the Fezile Fashion Skills Academy and the Fezile Mdletshe Fashion Agency, is part of the team designing Team South Africa’s kit for this year’s Olympics.
Naturally, the news is incredibly exciting for the KZN province and as work officially begins, Carol chats to CEO and founder of the Fezile Fashion Skills Academy, Fezile Mdletshe, about her involvement in the process.
“If I say the [moment we found out we would be assisting] was a surprise, it would make it seem like we weren’t expecting it,” an excited Fezile tells Carol. “The class of 2020 was so great that I expected something as big as this collaboration with Mr Price Sport and SASCOC.”

On how involved The Durban Fashion Fair class of 2020 is in designing the official kit for Team South Africa, Fezile explains: “The designs were designed and conceptualised by the winners of The Durban Fashion Fair class of 2020. Myself, the Ethekwini Municipality and Mr Price Sport have been in talks since the beginning of the year where SASCOC and Mr Price Sport briefed us on what happened in the past and what they are looking for. Now, I, as a representative of Fezile Fashion Skills Academy and the winners of the class of 2020 at The Durban Fashion Flair, will conceptualise the designs for the opening ceremony for the South African team and now it has been approved.”
