INTERESTING: Chinese tradition of confining mothers to rest 30-40 days after giving birth
Updated | By East Coast Radio
Now we can totally get down with this tradition...
We've heard of some bizarre traditions, but these are only bizarre to us because we are not familiar with them.
And by no means does it mean that we don't respect these unique traditions.
In fact, when it comes to this Chinese tradition, we are supportive and we are even considering trying to get this tradition in South Africa.
A Chinese woman on TikTok shared an age-old tradition from China: Postpartum Confinement.
Traditionally, the Chinese believe that when a woman gives birth, she should rest as much as possible after. So, birthing mothers would be confined in a room at home for anything from 30 to 40 days.
It is believed that the mother loses her 'chi' when she goes through child birth (with the pain and suffering).
Nowadays, there are actually confinement centre's around China that mothers can book into. It has become a business.
So, a bit of a luxury version of staying at home for your postpartum confinement.
This Chinese TikToker shared what it looks like inside the confinement centre, saying it's like a "staycay for one month".
She shares a video of the different rooms inside her suite and the services provided to her.
