A beautiful light feature has been erected at the KZNSA Gallery in Glenwood and it brings some light to the community.
Every community has their unique senses of beauty. When it comes to discovering Durban, Carol Ofori is an eager tourist. She loves learning about the various cultures and traditions of the people of KZN and she sure supports community spirit.
When it comes to a beautiful and light source, this new art feature that has been erected at the KZNSA gallery in Glenwood, speaks volumes about a holistic project. One that takes the community members thoughts and feelings into regard and shines the focus on them.
The community were brought into the art project called Darta. "The project culminated in a large lighting sculpture, entitled dARTa Lightstruck, which was installed in the gallery’s courtyard on July 11 where it will hang until August 1 as a pilot before being placed in a dark area of Bulwer Park. This will be done to highlight the impact that lighting has on the community’s sense of security.
"The project aims to portray data in a way that appeals to the public – so they can touch, hear and feel data that matters. Data was collected through 300 surveys which posed questions about each individual’s favourite Glenwood trait and their biggest challenges," Berea Mail reports.
The community members have been encouraged to visit the sculpture and take photos with the sculpture, and to also write on the chalkboard. It an integration that supports the views of the community and brings out some love for the residents needs.
What a wonderful initiative that takes the views of community members and translates it into forms of beauty. The art doesn't just serve as an art form though, it serves as a way of allowing the community to feel safe as it lightens up a dark area in Glenwood. The Bulwer park will be the new home of the sculpture after Sunday, the 1st of August.
