Imagine getting paid R470 an hour for drawing smileys on receipts?!
Updated | By East Coast Radio
Each employer to their own, right?
A woman shared a video on her TikTok with the text on the video reading, "When you make $29.50 just to draw smiley faces on receipts" and it ends up stirring up a conversation about pay per hour in different fields.
$29.50 is roughly around R470 an hour. Many people who came to the post thought it was unjust that an employee at a Costco (a wholesale store in the U.S) was earning the same rate per hour as many healthcare workers.

The part where it went sideways was when some healthcare workers indicated that the Costco workers didn't 'deserve' to earn that much. The line of thinking here was that their line of work was not as important as that of the healthcare workers.
We think that is way out of line. Safe to say that not all healthcare workers got into the field to help people, but rather for the money. Of course, we are not naïve to think that all people get into their chosen job paths because they are passionate about it.

"A comment from a person in the healthcare industry who said they’re out in the field “saving lives and you’re putting smiley faces on paper AND we have the same pay… Make it make sense." They often hear people in other fields express that they should be making more than people working “easier jobs”—”easier” was said sarcastically—like retail or food service." (Daily Dot)
Eish, talk about causing a TikTok riot. This line of thinking is both close minded and irrational. Come on people, we all can't be in the healthcare system, so don't make the ignorant conclusion that working at a retail outlet is easier than in a hospital or clinic.

It's definite that many industries need to relook at their rates paid per hour. But to shame others for being in 'easier' jobs, that's definitely not in any sort of good spirit. We should be praising each other for having a job, especially in this day and age.
Yes, life can be hard at times and it's easier to deflect on others rather than looking inward, and acting in our own interests. But that's no excuse to put someone else down for their work and what they do.
