Has your pet been vaccinated against rabies?
We are pet lovers and that's a fact. But this love comes with great responsibility. Part of that responsibility means making sure your furry family members are up-to-date with their vaccinations.
One of those very important vaccines is for the rabies virus. But sometimes it's not easy being a pet parent on top of the long list of responsibilities you already have. So...
As a way of curbing the spread of this virus, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has initiated a rabies vaccine campaign. And guess what? It's free!
Areas to the south of Durban will be focus for the campaign, as this is where rabies has been most prevalent. Some of the areas where the vaccinations will be taking place include Merebank, Austerville, Clairwood, and the Bluff.
The aim of the campaign is not just to protect our pets and communities, but also to improve the knowledge surrounding rabies in the community.
As much as the government has measures to deal with rabies, the issue has been that many people who have been bitten have not sought out medical attention as a matter of urgency.
In addition, the patients that have received treatment have not been completing their course of medication after being bitten.

The Municipal spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela told IOL: “Pet owners must bring their animal’s certificate from the previous vaccinations. If they do not have one, a certificate will be issued on the day.”
For more information about the vaccination schedule, members of the public can call: 031-3115150 / 031-3115153 / 031-3115162. The campaign is running from 5 to 11 April 2022.
