Dr Thandeka Ngcobo: “Your dreams are valid and they don’t have an expiry date”

Dr Thandeka Ngcobo opens up to Carol Ofori about her incredible journey to
become a medical doctor.
We love hearing from women who have defied the odds and have come out on tops - and that’s exactly why we got up close and personal with Dr Thandeka Ngcobo, who shares her journey of becoming a medical doctor, an Executive Board Member at the Godisanang Youth Empowering Foundation, a Corporate Affairs Officer at Ngcobo Empire, and a public speaker despite everything that was thrown at her.

Speaking to Carol, Dr Ngcobo says that despite falling pregnant during her matric year, she continued to push forward and fight for her dreams of becoming a medical doctor. “Just before we started our final matric exams, I found out I was pregnant. At the time, I had already sent out my applications to university because I knew I wanted to be a doctor,” Dr Ngcobo explains.
She adds that her pregnancy pushed her to work ten times harder and still achieve her dreams while being a mother. “For me, it took going back to the drawing board and sitting down with myself and having a conversation to tell myself that I had a plan and that I can’t let something that was unplanned get in the way.”

Despite all the challenges, Dr Ngcobo passed her matric in the Top 10 in the KZN region and continued to push throughout her years in university.
Today, she is one of the leading doctors in the region and has started public speaking to share her story in order to push people to believe in themselves. “As a young person, it’s incredibly important to have dreams and keep them alive. Your dreams are valid and they don’t have an expiry date.”
