What's the word of the year in South Africa? The Pan South African Language Board reveals the answer!
Updated | By East Coast Radio
Here's a clue, it is something that has affected all South Africans and usually lasts between two and four hours, but has been known to go on for longer...
What would our year be without something to show for it? Many people jumped on the trend at the beginning of the year to share their word of the year.
A word that would fuel them. Some used motivational words, others used a trigger word to overcome something, and others looked at inspiring words, so that they would stay focused and inspired during the year.
We loved it, it was a great way of staying true to your mission or goal for 2022.
In the spirit of having your own word for the year, the "Pan South African Language Board together with the media research company, Focal Points, released a shortlist for the 2022 South African Word of the Year. It is usually a term or expression that reflects on the year in language." (YouTube)
As you can imagine, that must be one tricky list, and we highly doubt that it is a positive word. Or one that's anything close to inspiring.
If we're honest with ourselves, we know that it will be something that will slap you in the face, because that's what these past couple of years have been for many of us. A slap in the face.

Some of the contenders included: Phala Phala, Xenophobia, Inganekwane, Loadshedding, and Gaslighting.
And the winner, which was announced on Monday, 17 October 2022 was infamously, Loadshedding.
We could've expected nothing less or more for that matter. But one thing is for certain, it's definitely the most used word of the year.
If you had an option what would you have elected as the word of the year?
