Do you shop at the cheapest or most expensive retailer in SA?
Updated | By East Coast Radio
Based on 12 grocery items, a survey conducted by a data company has revealed which retailer is the cheapest and which is the most expensive to shop at in South Africa.
There are those shoppers that let specials and discounts dictate where they shop and then there are those that are loyal to their preferred retailer.
For the majority, shopping based on specials has become something of a must. With the rising cost of everything, a good special is hard to find, and when you find it, you want to take full advantage.
It seems South Africa's data-driven publication, The Outlier, has undertaken the task of finding the cheapest and most expensive retailers based on twelve grocery items.
"A basket of 12 essential grocery items is the cheapest at Makro – for the third year in a row – compared to seven other local retailers as of 29 June 2023." (News24)
The Outlier collected prices over a period of 12 months for basic goods from selected major retailers in South Africa.
Their initial search has expanded quite a bit since starting in June 2022. The retailers included Woolworths, Checkers, Pick n Pay, and Spar, and, later, Food Lover’s Market, Shoprite, Boxer, and Makro were added to the spectrum.
The basket items included:
- 700g loaf of Albany Superior sliced white bread, or store brand
- 2-litre sunflower oil (cheapest option)
- 2.5kg Iwisa maize meal
- 2.5kg Selati white sugar
- 2-litre milk (cheapest option)
- 2kg Tastic rice
- 2.5kg Snowflake cake flour
- 175g bar of Dettol herbal soap
- 500g Fatti’s & Moni’s spaghetti, or store brand
- 400g smooth Black Cat peanut butter
- 1kg Jungle Oats
- 100 Joko tagless teabags
"In June this year, Outlier found that with the new basket of 12 items, Pick n Pay was the most expensive, costing R505.88 per basket, while Makro remained the cheapest for three consecutive months, at R450.99 for its basket. The second cheapest basket was from Shoprite at R463.88, followed by Food Lover’s Market at R474.30." (News24)
