#AppreciationMonday: Shoprite to pilot electric heavy duty truck with female driver
Updated | By East Coast Radio
A truck that is sustainable and will be responsible for local deliveries.
We have seen some great things over the years when it comes to female heavy duty drivers dominating in their trades.
But it always amazes us when a young and vibrant woman is given the opportunity to expand her skill - and even more so when she is recognised in that skill.
The lady moving trucks is Robin Jooste from Colorado Park, Mitchells Plain. She will be driving a state of the art new electric truck for the Shoprite group.
"The Shoprite Group is piloting a heavy-duty electric truck as part of its fleet. It doesn't rely on fuel, emits no carbon dioxide, keeps food cool, and glows in the dark." (Business Insider)
As part of their mission to reduce their carbon footprint, they have not only introduced an electric vehicle to their fleet, but have also installed rooftop solar panels at their distribution centres.

The Scania Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) is 100% electric and will be used for the retailer's local deliveries. The truck will be recharged using renewable energy, that will be generated by Shoprite's solar installations.
"The Scania BEV is a refrigerated truck that can hold approximately 16 pallets. It has nine batteries and rooftop solar panels, which also help power the cooling system. It's also the first Shoprite truck to feature glow-in-the-dark signage, which "will make it more visible when travelling at night"." (Business Insider)

Interestingly, the signage's glowing properties rely on simply being exposed to bright daylight and not on the solar panels powering the truck nor the batteries.
"The signage absorbs this light and then re-emits it as a luminous green glow at night." (Business Insider)
