#AppreciationMonday: Sarah Ferguson set to swim from Durban to Cape Town to raise awareness
Updated | By East Coast Radio
Sarah Ferguson, retired national swimmer for South Africa, takes on a challenge to raise awareness around the level of pollution that our oceans are facing.
When it comes to celebrating people that are going over and beyond, we are always first in line, in full cheer mode. So when we heard about what Sarah Ferguson is planning on doing to raise awareness around pollution, we wanted to dedicate our Appreciation Monday post to her.
Ferguson isn't just a retired South African national swimmer and Guinness World Record holder, her portfolio extends to physiotherapy, motivational speaking, and she is also involved in many projects that both uplift and create awareness.
When it comes to going all the way, we can firmly say that Ferguson is the epitome of this, as she lives her passion wholly and is truly an inspiration, as a woman, an entrepreneur, an athlete, and most definitely as a South African.
I believe in being authentic in creating sustainable change. I believe we are called to look after the earth and everything in it.- Sarah Ferguson
She has now taken on her biggest yet challenge, a 1,500km swim along the coast from Durban to Cape Town, in aid of raising awareness around ocean pollution.
"As the driving force behind conservation platform Breathe Conservation, Ferguson is focused on raising public awareness about the devastating impact plastic pollution in oceans and rivers is having on our planet," reports IOL.
It’s a huge undertaking from a logistical point of view and I hope to start in March. It will probably take a year to complete as I will take winter (June, July and August 2022) off. That is when the ocean is the winter feeding ground for great whites (sharks) and of course the Sardine Run. Even so, I will face massive currents and marine life such as sharks, jellyfish and bluebottles.- Sarah Ferguson
But it’s not too late and we’ve got to keep fighting. In the short break during COVID lockdown, carbon dioxide emissions dropped significantly which is a sign it can be done. Nature is amazing and will restore itself if we leave it alone. Each consumer can make changes to daily life and it’s important to raise awareness with the youth as they will create change.- Sarah Ferguson
We can all do our bit to help Sarah accomplish her mission, in fact it should be a mission that we all undertake. If everyone makes a small change then we will see a big difference, it's like that saying, many hands make light work.
So let's go for it! We love the ocean so let's take care of it.
