#AppreciationMonday: First ever transgender Barbie Doll made in honour of Laverne Cox
Updated | By East Coast Radio
Barbie is definitely diversifying the way children play...
If anything, as a parent you want your child to feel accepted, included, a part of something. But sometimes things don't happen the way you want them to...
So you turn to play time, to toys to allow your child to feel special. To be able to connect and engage with a toy can be so powerful in building a child's confidence levels.
But not all toys cater for the diversity of our communities of children.
In saying so, there are some brands out there who are trying to make that possible. One such being Mattel, with their range of evolutionary Barbie dolls.
As we approach Pride Month, it is such great news to hear that toy manufacturer, Mattel, has created a transgender Barbie.
The doll honours well-known actress and activist, Laverne Cox. You may know her from 'Orange is the New Black' and she also appeared in 'Inventing Anna'.
"Ms Cox, who has gone on to win numerous Emmy Awards and is an outspoken advocate for transgender issues, said she was shamed as a child for wanting a Barbie. Years later, after therapy, she finally went out and got one." (BBC)
She worked closely with the team at Mattel to be involved in the creation of her very own Barbie.
Her hope is that the doll will inspire children and will allow parents to embrace their children's gender identities, and never make them feel like it's wrong to want to play with a doll (regardless of their gender).
