Sharks confirm coaching structure for next season

Joey Mongalo, in his first season with the Sharks, has guided the Currie Cup side to seven consecutive wins and a home semi-final and will from next season take up the reins as defensive coach for the Sharks in the Heineken Challenge Cup and the Vodacom United Rugby Championship.

The Sharks Currie Cup side has been in brilliant defensive form and they have conceded the least amount of points in the tournament so far.

He will work under recently announced new head coach John Plumtree while Neil Powell reverts back to his role of Director of Rugby from the start of next season.

Plumtree returns to Durban having had roles at the Hurricanes in Super Rugby and been with the All Blacks so begins this stint with the Sharks with a wealth of experience and knowledge.

Also amongst the re-appointments is David Williams. Williams left the Sharks after the world was put into Covid-19 lockdown and had the Sharks playing exhilarating rugby in their final season in Super Rugby before the pandemic hit.

Williams has spent some time coaching in the UK and will com back to the Sharks with an exciting squad at his disposal.

Warren Whitely continues in his role as forwards coach and he is joined by Currie Cup forwards coach Philip Lemmer.

Phiwe Nomlomo also remains with the Sharks and will mentor the kicking game and exits.

Amongst the junior ranks, Mongalo’s Currie Cup assistant JP Pietersen will head up junior rugby with Mike Vowles and Luvuyiso Lusaseni under him.
