Sharks announce new CEO
Updated | By Shaun Ryan
There is a new man in charge at the Shark Tank.
Eduard Coetzee will take over the role of CEO of the Sharks, effective from September 2019.
Coetzee will succeed Gary Teichmann, who bows out following three years at the helm.
Chairman of the Sharks Board of Directors, Stephen Saad made the announcement today.
He said Teichmann took over the reigns at a challenging time for Sharks Rugby and brought stability and leadership to the role.
Saad says Teichmann, a former Sharks and Springbok captain, will remain actively involved with brand.
Meanwhile, Coetzee, who has been serving as COO since 2014, will receive a doctorate in Business Administration from the University of KwaZulu-Natal later this year.
Prior to his doctorate studies, Coetzee did extensive research into rugby administration while studying for a Masters degree from University of Cape Town's Graduate School of Business in Business Innovation.
As part of his dissertation, Coetzee focused on the development of South African rugby franchises into inclusive, sustainable and successful business models.
Coetzee says he is extremely humbled to be appointed CEO, adding that his strategy will be to build on the platform and stability created by Teichmann.
In a statement released by the Sharks, Coetzee stressed the importance of culture.
“However, as a strategy I believe that people process culture, culture is my strategy and it needs to be worked on daily in order to be effective. Driving the Sharks culture will create unity from top to bottom. When the chips are down, absolute alignment is key -- a strong culture will align individuals in a tough environment like professional sport,” said Coetzee.
