SA swimmers claim silverware in Tokyo
South African swimming duo Cameron van der Burgh and Giulio Zorzi were in top form on the first day of the Tokyo leg of the FINA Swimming World Cup on Wednesday.
The training partners occupied the first two positions in the men’s 50 metre breastroke with Van der Burgh claiming first place in a time of 27.18 seconds.
Zorzi followed behind Van der Burgh touching the wall in a time of 27.93s to finish ahead of Japan’s Ryouta Nomura, who bagged the bronze in 28.01s.
The South African duo also shared the podium at the 2013 FINA World Short-course championships when Van der Burgh claimed the title with Zorzi finishing third.
Van der Burgh leads the overall Swimming World Cup rankings and is set to add his third series title after he won it for consecutive years in 2008 and 2009.
There are two more galas left following the Tokyo leg with the series finishing with stops in Doha and Dubai next week.
